Trauma Therapy
Healing From Trauma With Compassion and Evidence-Based Care
ARE YOU READY TO HEAL FROM TRAUMA AND FEEL SAFE IN YOUR LIFE AGAIN?
Trauma can come from a single event—like an accident, assault, or loss—or from ongoing experiences such as childhood abuse, neglect, or chronic stress. It can leave invisible wounds, affecting your mind, body, and relationships.
At Georgia Family Therapy, we offer a safe and supportive space to process your experiences, rebuild trust in yourself and others, and restore a sense of peace. Healing is possible—at any age and at any stage of recovery.
Recognizing Trauma and PTSD Symptoms
Trauma shows up differently for everyone. You might notice:
Living in high alert
When your internal alarm system stays "on," you may feel constantly edgy, irritable, or watchful, making it difficult to rest because your body still feels the need to protect itself.
Shifts in mood and outlook
Trauma can change how you view yourself and the world, often leading to heavy feelings of guilt or a sense of being "shut down" and emotionally disconnected from those you love.
Pattern of avoidance
It is a natural protective instinct to stay away from people, places, or even internal thoughts that remind you of the trauma, as your system tries to shield itself from further distress.
Navigating intrusive memories
These are sudden, unwanted "recordings" of a difficult event—such as flashbacks or nightmares—that can make the past feel intensely present and overwhelming for your mind and body.
If you experience these symptoms, you’re not broken—you’re having a normal response to an overwhelming experience. Therapy can help your nervous system and mind find safety again.
How Trauma Therapy Helps
Healing from trauma is about regaining safety, control, and self-compassion. Our therapists use gentle, research-based approaches to help you:
Process painful memories at your own pace
Address underlying beliefs such as “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault”
Reduce triggers, flashbacks, and avoidance behaviors
Reconnect with yourself and others
Rebuild emotional regulation and a sense of safety in your body
Develop tools for grounding, relaxation, and resilience
Our Approach

We specialize in trauma-informed, evidence-based care tailored to each person’s history and goals. Our clinicians integrate multiple modalities to ensure safety, empowerment, and lasting change:
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Structured sessions that help you process traumatic memories, identify unhelpful beliefs, and develop coping skills. Adapted for adults, teens, and children.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
An extensively researched therapy using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce distress.
Brainspotting
A focused, body-based method that uses eye position to access and release stored trauma. It’s especially effective for deep emotional or somatic reactions.
Somatic Experiencing & Mindfulness
Grounding, breathing, and body-awareness practices that help you regulate your nervous system and feel safe in your body again.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
A compassionate approach that helps you understand and heal “parts” of yourself that hold pain, fear, or shame—restoring balance and self-leadership.
Our therapists emphasize collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and consent at every step—so you never feel rushed or re-traumatized.
What to Expect
We recognize that trauma affects everyone differently. Your treatment plan will be personalized, whether you prefer a gradual pace or a more intensive format.
Assessment & Safety Planning
We begin with a thorough evaluation of your history, symptoms, and current needs. Together, we create a safety plan and determine whether a traditional or intensive approach best suits you.Intensive Phase (First 4 Weeks)
For clients experiencing acute distress—such as intense anxiety, flashbacks, or insomnia—we may recommend twice-weekly sessions during the first month. This consistent rhythm helps build trust, stabilize emotions, and accelerate healing. During this phase, we focus on grounding, resourcing, and early trauma processing using EMDR, TF-CBT, Brainspotting, and somatic techniques.Weekly Processing & Integration
Once stability improves, sessions typically shift to once a week. We continue processing memories, deepening insight, and strengthening new coping strategies. Frequency remains flexible based on your needs.Children & Teens
Our therapists are among the few in the greater Atlanta area trained in EMDR, Brainspotting, and TF-CBT for children and adolescents. We adapt trauma work to each child’s developmental level using play, art, and family involvement to support healing and safety.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Should I use EMDR or Brainspotting?
Both EMDR and Brainspotting are powerful, evidence-based "bottom-up" therapies that bypass the logical mind to process trauma stored in the body, so the best choice often depends on whether you prefer a more structured, protocol-driven approach (EMDR) or a flexible, focused-gaze approach (Brainspotting) that follows your body's natural leads. You Georgia Family Therapy therapist will help you find the approach that is best for you.
Do you provide trauma therapy online?
Yes. We offer secure telehealth across Georgia, as well as in-person sessions at our Sandy Springs office.
Do you offer EMDR intensives?
Yes. We offer both traditional weekly therapy and EMDR intensives for clients seeking focused, accelerated healing within a structured timeframe.
Is trauma therapy re-traumatizing?
No. Our process emphasizes safety and pacing. We begin with stabilization and grounding before processing difficult memories, ensuring you always feel supported and in control.
How do I know if I have PTSD?
You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from trauma therapy. If past experiences still affect your thoughts, emotions, or relationships, trauma-informed care can help.
What types of trauma do you treat?
We treat a wide range of trauma, including abuse, neglect, accidents, loss, medical trauma, and relational trauma. Our approach is flexible to meet both acute and complex trauma needs.

Hope and Healing Are Possible
No matter how long ago the trauma occurred, recovery is possible. Our compassionate, integrative approach—combining EMDR, Brainspotting, TF-CBT, and somatic therapies—helps restore safety, balance, and connection for adults, teens, and children alike.
Take the next step toward healing. You deserve to feel whole again.
